Full of forests, peaks, alpine lakes and charming mountain towns, British Columbia is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. With international travel out of the question, there’s no better place to be than right here exploring our own backyard.
This month I took the Strait & Narrow Van (name pending) on an adventure and drove 700km East to visit Nelson, BC.

To give you a better idea of what the town of Nelson is like, here are a few fast facts:
- Nelson has the highest number of restaurants per capita in all of Canada
- More than 1/3rd of the population identify as artists
- Nelson’s art scene was kickstarted by draft dodgers (AKA hippies) who relocated to the Kootenays
- Valhalla Provincial Park is home to Canada’s most thriving mountain goat population
Here’s a look at some of the most beautiful places we visited during our stay.
To kick off the trip, we decided to hike one of the area’s tallest mountains, Mount Loki. Everything from the drive up the logging road to the massive marmot population was equally impressive. The only drawback was the scolding 35-degree temperatures. Luckily that was something a can of Strait & Narrow can fix!

Next, we headed further south to visit of the provincial parks in the area. Having the van meant we had a fridge along with us and unsurprisingly we made a few friends by sharing cold cocktails with fellow hikers. One highlight was sharing a summit cheers hours into our mountain adventure.

Like most trips, this one felt too short. With so much to explore in the Kootenays I can’t wait to visit again soon.
Cheers for now
